Summer Skin Damage

How To Reverse Summer Skin Damage

Richard has just returned from a couple of weeks in Bologna, spending time with loved ones and enjoying a well-earned summer break. The trip was split between city life, time in the mountains and days at the beach with friends. With days spent outdoors enjoying plenty of sunshine, it got him thinking about summer skin damage, which is a concern he sees in the clinic every year at around this time.

Even if you’re diligent with SPF, it’s unrealistic to spend the whole summer avoiding the sun. The important thing is understanding what that additional UV exposure can do to your skin. At RP Aesthetics, late summer brings more conversations about pigmentation appearing darker, uneven skin tone and lacklustre complexions. A tan will fade, but some of the changes caused by UV exposure won’t disappear quite so easily.

What Does Summer Skin Damage Look Like?

Summer skin damage doesn’t look the same on everyone. Richard looks for several different common changes:

  • Pigmentation and sun spots – UV radiation stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin, making freckles, existing pigmentation and areas of sun damage appear darker.
  • Redness and broken capillaries – Heat can cause blood vessels to dilate, making persistent redness and small visible vessels around the nose and cheeks more noticeable.
  • Fine linesUV radiation generates oxidative stress and contributes to collagen degradation within the dermis, gradually affecting your skin’s strength and elasticity.
  • Uneven texture – Repeated UV exposure can disrupt normal cell renewal and contribute to a less even surface texture.
  • Dull skin – Sun exposure and increased water loss can leave your complexion feeling dry and looking less radiant.

Can You Reverse Summer Skin Damage?

It’s important to be realistic about the word ‘reverse’. No treatment can undo every minute you’ve ever spent in the sun, and cumulative UV exposure remains one of the major factors involved in skin ageing. What Richard can do is treat many of the visible changes it leaves behind and help improve the condition of your skin going forward.

This distinction matters.

A brown spot, a broken capillary and rough skin texture might all have become more noticeable after the same summer holiday, but biologically they’re different problems. Treating them effectively means choosing technology or skincare that targets the right structure within the skin. That’s why Richard doesn’t recommend a blanket ‘post-summer treatment’. He assesses your skin during a consultation and creates a personalised skincare plan.

It’s also important to note that not every change to your skin should be treated as a cosmetic concern. Be vigilant for new or changing moles, lesions or patches of skin, particularly anything that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, crusts, itches or looks unusual for you. If you notice anything concerning, speak to your GP straight away.

Treating Summer Skin Damage With Stellar M22

If pigmentation, redness or broken capillaries are your main concern, Richard may recommend treatment with Stellar M22™ by Lumenis. Its IPL technology delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin.

Different wavelengths can be selected according to what Richard is trying to target. When treating pigmentation, the light energy is absorbed by melanin. When treating vascular concerns, the target is haemoglobin within the blood vessels. The absorbed energy damages the unwanted target while surrounding tissue is preserved, allowing your body’s natural processes to gradually clear the broken down pigment or vascular lesion. This is why the same Stellar M22™ platform can be useful for several visible signs of summer skin damage, including sun spots, pigmentation, facial redness and visible capillaries.

Timing matters too. Richard will ask about recent tanning and sun exposure before carrying out light-based treatments and will explain the precautions you need to take before and afterwards. Autumn is a great time of year to assess your skin and put a suitable treatment plan in place.

SkinPen™ May Be A Better Choice For Your Skin

Not every patient with summer skin damage needs a Stellar M22™ treatment plan. If the problem Richard sees is predominantly one of texture rather than colour, microneedling may be a more appropriate recommendation.

SkinPen™ creates thousands of controlled microchannels within the skin, triggering its natural wound-healing response. This stimulates cellular activity involved in producing and remodelling collagen and elastin. It’s a completely different mechanism from IPL.

Richard may recommend SkinPen™ when summer skin damage is contributing to a generally rough, dull or uneven appearance, or where concerns such as enlarged pores, fine lines or acne scarring are also present. Rather than making the surface look temporarily brighter, the aim is to encourage genuine remodelling within the skin and improve its quality progressively.

Skin Care At Home

Clinic treatments are only part of the picture. If you’ve spent the summer exposing your skin to higher levels of UV radiation, what you do every morning and evening really matters. Richard creates personalised Obagi® home skincare programmes that complement the work being done in clinic.

He may incorporate Obagi® Professional-C® Serum into your routine as Vitamin C has antioxidant properties which brightens the skin. He may also recommend an Obagi® retinol cream to support cell turnover, or products from the Nu-Derm® System to target uneven tone and pigmentation.

When introducing potent active ingredients, expert guidance is essential. As Lead Obagi Ambassador for the North East, Richard can select the right products, strengths and combinations for your skin, introducing them at the appropriate stage to achieve the best possible results. Daily SPF is equally important as this will help to prevent future summer skin damage and maintain the improvements you’ve worked to achieve.
