Changing Seasons, Changing Skincare

Each moment of the year has its own beauty – the weaving of golden stalks in summer meadows; the sparkle of winter snow. Our skin, too, gifts us seasonal beauty. Be it bronzed summer glows or rosy winter cheeks, our complexion rewards us after it adapts to the ever-changing weather.

It’s the settling-in period between the changing of seasons in which we tend to experience most problems with our skin. Our body is expected to instantly respond to significant differences in temperatures, humidity and UV exposure and when it doesn’t, our skin suffers the consequences.

RP Aesthetics is here to give your skin a helping hand this autumn. Here is our complete guide to autumn skincare.

How The Changing Weather Affects Your Skin

Sometimes changes in weather can be gradual, but the bite of autumn’s breeze drove us abruptly away from summer this time round. The drop in temperature and humidity can quickly lead to dry skin, and switching from interiors blasting central heating to cool outdoor temperatures only exacerbates the problem.

Extreme temperatures can disrupt your body’s first line of defence – the stratum corneum. More commonly known as the skin barrier, this fragile layer of skin regulates water loss and protects us from pollutants, irritants and bacteria. When we become dehydrated, the skin barrier can crack, causing dry, itchy patches, a loss of elasticity and the development of wrinkles. Dryness can also lead to the build-up of dead skin cells, which clogs pores and triggers break-outs. Maintaining good levels of hydration is therefore vital for the skin’s health.

Changing Skincare Routines

Follow these tips to help your skin retain as much moisture as possible this autumn.

Avoid Hot Showers
While we all enjoy the feeling of tropical water warming our bodies, it can strip the skin of its natural elements, preventing cells from locking in moisture.

Pay Attention To Your Lips
If your lips become dry or cracked, try to avoid licking them. This provides temporary relief, however, further chapping can be caused as the moisture evaporates. Use a moisturiser or lip balm to seal in moisture and protect the lips.

Exfoliate Weekly
Clear the skin of dead skin cells by exfoliating once or twice a week. This helps to prevent dull complexions and acne outbreaks.

Use Hand Cream Regularly
We tend to wash our hands more regularly in the winter to avoid spreading colds and other illnesses. With Covid still invisibly present, hand washing may be an additional cause of cracked hands, alongside decreasing temperatures. Start using a hand cream now to avoid dry skin.
