Everything You Need To Know About The Obagi Blue Peel
Spring is the season of new beginnings. As we welcome longer days and an increase in temperature, we also embrace updated skincare routines. Ditching heavy moisturisers and introducing twice-weekly exfoliation may help to brighten the complexion, but for a completely fresh start, the Obagi Blue Peel removes all traces of dull and lifeless winter skin.
What Is The Obagi Blue Peel?
Obagi are industry leaders in skincare. Their approach to product development begins with a deep understanding of cellular biology, ensuring that their selected ingredients stimulate the proteins that diminish with age and promote healthy skin tissue. Every product they develop seeks to correct specific skin concerns whilst deeply nourishing the complexion. The primary aim of the Obagi Blue Peel is to remove the outermost layers of the skin, cleansing the pores and addressing pigmentation issues to reveal a brighter-looking complexion.
The extracellular matrix provides structural support to skin cells, anchoring them in place. When the skin produces new cells, these work their way up to the surface, replacing the old ones that flake away. The primary ingredient in the Obagi Blue Peel, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), breaks down the extracellular matrix, speeding up the cell renewal process.
TCA is self-neutralising, meaning that it will continue penetrating the skin and coagulating proteins within the extracellular support system until it has all been used up. For this reason, the solution is applied in layers. A single thin layer will remove the outermost skin cells, resulting in a superficial peel that brightens the complexion. However, to target specific areas of concern such as pigmentation, wrinkles or scarring, the practitioner is able to apply further layers, resulting in a deeper peel.
The procedure will take approximately 30 – 60 minutes to carry out and the blue colour will persist until the peeling process is complete. The skin begins to shed after around 2-3 days and can continue for up to 2 weeks, depending on the amount of solution applied. For this reason, some clients opt to take a few days off work.
Which Skin Concerns Does It Treat?
The Obagi Blue Peel treats a wide range of skin concerns. These include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin laxity
- Pigmentation issues
- Scarring (including acne scarring)
- Uneven skin texture
- Solar keratoses
When Should I Book My Obagi Blue Peel?
After undergoing any type of Chemical Peel treatment, clients are required to avoid sun exposure as new skin cells are vulnerable to the sun’s powerful UV rays. As spring progresses, the temperature will increase, so the sooner you book in for your Obagi Blue Peel the better!
Pre-Care And Aftercare
We recommend that clients apply products from the Obagi Nu-derm System to their face daily for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to their peel. This prepares the skin for treatment and reduces downtime.
Once your Obagi Blue Peel is complete, allow the skin to shed naturally and avoid the temptation to peel away visible flakes. Paracetamol may be taken to reduce inflammation and skin irritability. Sun exposure and the use of makeup must be avoided for at least 7 days, after which time SPF 35 should be applied for a minimum of 6 weeks. Once the peeling has come to an end, continue applying Obagi Nu-derm products.
