At RP Aesthetics, we invest in the most advanced medical-grade technologies to help you achieve healthy, radiant skin. The Stellar M22™ by Lumenis is a multi-application platform that offers a diverse range of Laser and IPL treatments. The device is trusted worldwide for its proven results and scientific precision. This month’s blog acts as an in-depth guide to the Stellar M22™, showcasing how each of its unique handpieces work and the skin concerns they treat.

One Modular System For Laser & IPL Treatments

1. Stellar™ IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

How it works:
Stellar™ IPL uses high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light, filtered to target specific chromophores (colour-bearing structures). The main chromophores in the skin are melanin, haemoglobin and water which each absorb light at different wavelengths. During IPL treatments, the wavelength range (515–1200 nm) can be altered to target different depths. Energy is absorbed by melanin (pigment) or haemoglobin (blood vessels), causing controlled damage to unwanted pigmentation or vascular lesions. Your body’s natural healing then removes the damaged cells, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin. Advanced cooling and pulse shaping minimise discomfort while protecting the surrounding tissue.

Best for treating:

  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Freckles and lentigines
  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Overall skin rejuvenation

2. ResurFX™

How it works:
ResurFX™ uses a 1565 nm non-ablative fractional laser, which creates thousands of tiny, controlled columns of thermal micro-injury in the dermis while leaving the skin surface intact. This stimulates collagen and elastin production deep within the skin, promoting natural repair and gradual improvement in skin texture and firmness.

Unlike ablative lasers that remove skin layers, ResurFX™ reduces downtime by heating only beneath the skin’s surface. CoolScan™ technology shapes each pulse pattern for uniform coverage and comfort. ResurFX™ and IPL treatments work hand in hand to offer a more thorough anti-ageing treatment.

Best for treating:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars and other scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Uneven texture
  • Large pores

3. Multi-Spot™ Nd:YAG

How it works:
This handpiece delivers precise pulses of 1064 nm wavelength laser light, which penetrates deeply into the skin to coagulate blood vessels. The laser targets oxyhaemoglobin in vessels, causing them to collapse and be naturally reabsorbed, significantly reducing the appearance of broken capillaries, facial veins and leg veins. Contact cooling protects the epidermis during treatment. The Nd:YAG’s deeper penetration makes it ideal for treating vascular conditions safely, especially on darker skin tones.

Best for treating:

  • Larger facial veins
  • Leg veins and spider veins
  • Hemangiomas
  • Deeper vascular lesions

4. Q-Switched Nd:YAG

How it works:
Unlike IPL treatments that use a broad spectrum of light, Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers emit a single, specific wavelength. These short, high-energy pulses shatter pigment particles through a photoacoustic effect rather than heat. Tattoo ink or stubborn pigmentation rapidly absorbs the laser energy, creating a shockwave which breaks down the pigment into smaller fragments. Your body’s immune system then clears away the fragmented pigment naturally over time. Multiple sessions are often needed for complete clearance, depending on pigment depth and type.

Best for treating:

  • Unwanted tattoos
  • Pigmentation, including melasma
